Our Approach

Authentic Kendo. Genuine tradition.

La Cañada Kendo Academy is dedicated to traditional Kendo training — practiced as it has been taught for generations, with discipline, respect, correct fundamentals, and a commitment to continuous personal development. Every class begins and ends with rei (etiquette). Every student, regardless of age or rank, is held to the same standard of effort and respect.

Discipline

Consistent, focused practice is the foundation of all progress in Kendo.

Respect

Rei — the bow — is not ceremony. It is the acknowledgment of the relationship between student, teacher, and the art itself.

Perseverance

Kendo is demanding. The willingness to continue through difficulty is what the practice is designed to cultivate.

Character

The ultimate goal of Kendo is not victory in competition, but the development of a person of strong and honest character.

Kendo in La Cañada Flintridge

Rigorous training.
Lifelong practice.

Kendo — the way of the sword — is a Japanese martial art practiced with bamboo shinai and protective bogu armor. It demands physical precision, mental focus, and the cultivation of spirit through repeated, disciplined practice.

At LCKA, students train in the traditional manner: learning correct posture, footwork, and striking technique before advancing to partner practice and eventually full keiko. Rank examinations follow the standards of recognized Kendo organizations.

Youth & Teens

Character built
through practice.

Kendo gives young students a structured environment in which they repeatedly practice focus, self-control, respect, perseverance, and confidence — and learn to meet challenges with composure and effort.

Students learn to bow before entering the floor, to listen carefully, to try again after difficulty, and to respect both their training partners and their teachers. These are habits that carry far beyond the dojo.

Kendo is a traditional art with a clear path of progression. The discipline and commitment it asks of young practitioners are part of what makes it so rewarding — for students and families alike.

Student Instructor Program

Leadership through kendo.

Leadership development is an important part of training at La Cañada Kendo Academy. Students who have earned 2nd Dan and consistently demonstrated exemplary conduct may be considered for appointment as Student Instructors, following review and approval by the instructors.

Student Instructors gain practical leadership experience by helping lead group training and assisting newer students under the guidance of LCKA instructors. The role gives experienced students an opportunity to develop responsibility, communication, and leadership while serving others in the dojo.
