Schedule & Fees

Train together. Progress together.

LCKA welcomes youth ages 7 and up, teens, adults, complete beginners, and experienced practitioners. All students train together during our regular Monday and Wednesday evening practices, with instruction adapted to each student's experience level.

Training Schedule

Monday & Wednesday

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Youth: Ages 7 and up
Teens & Adults: All experience levels welcome

Youth, teens, and adults train together during the same two-hour practice.

A typical practice includes approximately one hour devoted to fundamentals, followed by approximately one hour of technique development and practice appropriate to each student's level.

Beginners receive separate instruction in fundamental movements and techniques during the more advanced portion of practice, allowing them to build a strong foundation while remaining part of the larger dojo community.

Your First Steps

You do not need everything on day one.

Beginners only need a shinai (bamboo sword) to begin training.

As students progress, they gradually add appropriate Kendo clothing and equipment. Full protective armor (bogu) is generally introduced later, typically around six months into training, depending on the student's progress and readiness.

For Beginners

We guide you from the beginning.

Starting Kendo can feel unfamiliar, so LCKA provides new students with detailed introductory information explaining what to expect, how to prepare, and the basic steps for beginning Kendo training.

During regular practice, beginners receive dedicated instruction in basic movements and techniques while more experienced students continue with advanced technique and competition practice.

A detailed beginner guide is provided when a student begins training.

Federation Registration

Registration for participation and advancement.

LCKA students are required to register separately with the appropriate Kendo federation through the designated federation registration website.

Federation registration is separate from LCKA monthly tuition.

Federation registration is required for insurance coverage, tournament participation, and rank examinations.

La Cañada Kendo Academy is a member dojo of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) and the Western Kendo Federation (WKF). Federation registration supports participation in official ranking examinations and federation activities.

Kendo for Families

Parents and children can train together.

Because youth, teens, and adults practice during the same training sessions, Kendo offers families a meaningful opportunity to learn and develop together.

At LCKA, this is part of the dojo's own experience: all three instructors have children who have practiced or continue to practice Kendo.
